MasterClass: The Short Cut

An animated logo that is future-facing and flexible.
The Short Cut is a new way of showing MasterClass classes in small, digestible nuggets. Classes are 30-minute cuts of the full-length versions, so members who are interested in the topic but don’t have time to take the full class can still get a complete experience and earn something in the time it would take to watch one episode of a half-hour show. The branding aim was to show that classes are packed with great content, delivered in a sophisticated and modern package.
Bold and loud, yet simple
MasterClass wanted a logo for The Short Cut that would tie each class together with a uniform skin, but also be informative and simple. It was also imperative that The Short Cut kept the signature MasterClass black and white color palette. In response, ALTR Studio developed the logotype and graphic arrow.
The arrow motif symbolizes connection, direction and the future, it is also a cinematic reference harkening to a “play” button and film editing.
Duplicating the arrow and creating a field of arrows within the frame provides a visual reference and reminder that each class of The Short Cut this is just one class of a larger library of classes.
Motion that highlights the concept
Fast cuts and wipes that follow the arrow’s path keep the pace of the motion aligned with the concept behind The Short Cut. Using the arrow as a mask to frame the instructors and classes further enhance the branded experience as distinct from the full-length MasterClass experience.
